Searching for owls

On the road again, heading north to search out some winter fun. The trip started in Ann Arbor, where it was 10F and ended in Sault Ste. Marie where it was 28F.

Besides the excitement of the Snowy Owl, bird-watcher friends know the significance of exit-373 on I-75. We were with our friend Mike at Rudyard. And it didn’t disappoint.

Sometimes a bird just looks away, coyly trying to ignore you. But patience pays off.

But it wasn’t just snowies, there were a number of Rough-legged Hawks, which I always find difficult to photograph when they are perched.

This was our final snowy at Rudyard. It was across a hay field, sitting on the corner of a barn. We had traveled 10 miles of roads and spotted 10 different snowies. Then it was off to the Plaza Motor Motel where we will stay for the week.

Dinner choices in the Sault are sparse on Sunday and Monday, when most places close. But Jose’s proved to be an excellent choice. Susan surprised me when she ordered carnitas (which were excellent) while I had chicken tamales with mole (also excellent).

On Tuesday we will be searching for a hawk-owl and Sharp-tailed Grouse. But first another interesting find.

More tomorrow…
