When you are half-way across the Continent you want everything that you see to be something that you can’t see back home. But that’s not reality. But seeing birds or plants that care common back in Michigan is still fun. We started a walk the other day with a flock of crows at the corner. The crows were eating caterpillars and acorns.

A couple of blocks away we found an Anna’s Hummingbird that was kinds enough to pose for me.

Some fungi on a log.

A fence covered with lichens and mosses.

A close-up of some Cladonia lichens (a pixie cup that is perhaps Cladonia fimbriata or a similar species).

And finally the fruiting heads of a moss that is currently beyond my ability to identify with my reference books.
More tomorrow…
