Our day started at the port in Newport where we were looking for sea lions, but as usual were distracted by everything, such as the above Chestnut-backed Chickadee. We were, however successful in finding hundreds of sea lions.

After leaving Newport we headed south and stopped at Beaver Creek State Park, where there were a lot of ducks, among other things.

One of the most abundant ducks there were American Wigeon, both males (on the left) and females (on the right).

The second most numerous ducks were Green-winged Teal.

Walking the boardwalk trail near the nature center Susan found a patch of Woolly bird’s nest fungus. These fungi are smaller in diameter than a dime.
The we headed towards Florence where we stopped at the Darlingtonia Rest Area in search of Cobra lilies (Darlingtonia californica), one of the largest of the pitcher plants.

Another fun discovery for me was finding a species of Lobaria, a lichen that I had not seen before.

Today we will be celebrating Susan’s birthday with Alexis and the kids. More on that tomorrow.
