I love mosses, but I need references to identify what we have found. Unfortunately my moss books are back in Michigan. I do have one small reference with me. But most of these will go unidentified until we are home.

While the first two pictures look almost identical they are different species one is Neckera douglasii (the first picture) while the second is in a closely related, but different genus. Both were growing on hemlocks.

This is Grimmia pulvinata, a species that is mainly, if not always found on rocks.

Another one that superficially appears similar to Neckea, but the leaves are shaped differently.

This cute little moss was growing on a rock, and is unidentified at the moment.

Another interesting, but unidentified moss, again growing on a rock.
Finally two liverworts, which are closely related to mosses.

I am quite fond of liverworts because there are far fewer species than mosses, and most in Michigan grown in cedar bogs. Both of these “should” be easy to identify since there are only some 55 species in coastal Oregon.
More tomorrow which will be a fun day in Eugene.
