Oregon birds (part-1) and the latest on Covid

Yesterday there were several news reports on a new strain of SARS-CoV-2 discovered in South Africa. The new strain is B.1.1.529. Last week in South Africa numbers rose from 200 cases a day to almost 2500 yesterday. Travelers have already spread it to Botswana and Hong Kong. I am sure that the WHO (which already is following the situation) and the CDC will be issuing more detailed reports in the coming week. Now, on to birds.

Red-breasted Sapsucker next to some of the holes that it made.

Golden-crowned Sparrow that was feeding with a flock of (Oregon) Juncoes.

One of the Juncoes hanging out with the Golden-crowned Sparrow.

A Merlin watching Juncoes feeding.

A very dark Fox Sparrow.

Black Scoter. With the serious wave action and the continued rearranging of a bunch of scoters this was a difficult shot to get.

One of a dozen or so Surf Scoters in the waves.

Western Gull

Glaucous-winged Gull (or possibly a hybrid Glaucous-winged x Glaucous Gull, also called a Pacific Gull.

Black Oystercatcher

I think that this is a Surfbird, but am not convinced (yet).

More tomorrow…
