During my trip to Panama in 2019 there were many butterflies out and about. One day we encountered a mineral “slick” – soils rich in minerals that were wet, but drying in the sun. There were hundreds of butterflies on the ground. This is a small photographic sample of them.

Underwing of a least heliconian.

A least heliconian in flight.

I believe that this is a giant swallowtail, although there are several very similar tropical species.

Yet to be identified members of the family Piridae.

Banded-orange heliconian

Yet to be identified.

An unidentified sulphur.

And finally a waiter daggerwing.
More tomorrow…
