Toothed art challenge

long-nosed gar

The above photo of a gar is about as toothy as it can get. This will be one of the photos used for this “toothed” art challenge. With one exception these will all be zoo or aquarium photos.

These two pine martins were found high in a spruce off Basnau Road, in Chippewa County, Michigan. Susan and I were leading the Botany, bugs and beasts tour for the Whitefish Point Bird Observatory about 8-10 years ago. We had designed that tour to emphasize early fall plants and insects, as well as whatever animals we found. Finding two pine martins was a pretty amazing treat.

As I entered graduate school I had a keen interest in studying Primates, not birds. Funny how things change with time. Initially, I was interested in Primate teeth and bones (which ultimately was one of the reasons I got my my first job in the Anatomy Department at the University of Michigan). But with my career first in research, then teaching I never lost interest in Primates.

While I have seen a variety of New World monkeys in Mexico and Central America I would like to see our nearest DNA relatives, Chimpanzees and Bonobos in Africa some day.

Tomorrow the art challenge is cold, which will take me back to a sketchbook and a small project that I worked on one winter.

Until then…
