In Spring, 2002 we went to Washington, D.C. because Susan won a Presidential Teaching Award. Additionally, she got to testify before Congress on the state of education in America. As I tell people, I went along as her arm candy.
During the day, while she was at meetings and working I found interesting places for us to eat since many, but not all of the meals were covered in the award. I also took the time to sketch at interesting places.

On each journal page I’d sketch with colored water color pens as well as take notes on the birds and interesting things that I saw.

I was really excited to see the White House as well as other historical sites.

This might have been the first, possibly the second time that Susan ever saw me wearing a tie.

All of the art work and furniture was from the 1770s. Since the carpets were white the only place to drink red wine was on the balcony, overlooking the Potomac River and Jefferson Memorial. That was fortunate for us as we were able to watch a Barn Owl glide through the lights at dusk heading off to hunt.

Our final night in Washington was a dinner cruise on the Potomac River, with bands at both ends of the ship.
This was truly “a trip of a lifetime.”
More tomorrow with the Sunday funnies and the “spotted” art challenge.
