Spending a lot of time at our cabin we have gotten used to the sound of fog horns, which are rather pleasing as each freighter has a slightly different sound. But when the infamous storms of November arrive it is a different story. The winds blow, frequently all day and night, north winds crossing Lake Superior from distant Ontario. I had always wanted to be here for one of those storms – and believe me, one is enough. Our cabin creaked and moaned all night. In the morning the waves hitting the bay near us were arriving head high. Out on the bay I could see the lights of nine freighters who had some through the locks at Sault Ste. Marie and turned into the bay rather than face the waves on Lake Superior, which were topping out at 22 feet that day.

It was on one of those November nights that the Edmund Fitzgerald sank heading for Whitefish Bay.
But the challenge today is loud, as the storms are, I wanted to highlight something positive like sports and the noise of the crowd. In the 1960s and 1970s I attended a lot of baseball and hockey games, even a few basketball games. It wasn’t the late 1970s that I had my camera and a dark room (more on that in the future) and was fortunate enough to get photos of some of my childhood sports heroes.

Al Kaline coming to bat.
Hank Aaron in his first game as a Milwaukee Brewer, and Don Baylor as a rookie with Baltimore.

Gordie Howe as a member of the Huston Aeros in the WHA, the only time he played in Detroit (at Cobo) because the Michigan Stags didn’t last a full season.

Howe might have had a Gordie Howe Hat-trick that game. I remember the fight and perhaps a goal. Regardless I real thrill for me.
Speaking of hockey, the season is starting and there will be a bonus hockey cartoon post later.
Tomorrow the art challenge is step-by-step, stay tuned…
