
We were visiting friends in Petosky recently. They had been gifted lots of English walnuts by their neighbor. I immediately thought that this was perfect for my Sciartober challenge today which is “shelled”. We went to visit the tree that these were from. Nearby there was a tuliptree and a ginkgo. None of these native to the north, two not native to North America. But it got me to thinking about other native nuts.

The above illustration of acorns is from my book on trees that I kept back in the 1990s. As is the American chestnut below.

I wish that my scanner had done a better job on these. Maybe I should have used by phone camera which “might” have done a better job.
A final set of illustrations are of a different type of shells.

The above snail shells are of snails that are native to Michigan.
The challenge tomorrow is “colorful.”
