Today we had breakfast with Mike at Anna’s House, a place that none of us had eaten before. Every mug was different, and sourced from wherever they could get them.

The art challenge for yesterday (I’ll always be a day behind) was “microscopic.” I went through old sketchbooks (used for teaching, or just for the sake of drawing) and pulled out a bunch of illustrations of protists.

Lots of varieties. I’ve always enjoyed drawing what I had seen using a microscope. In high school (quite some time ago) biology I can remember have to get drawing paper and pencils specifically for this purpose. I was disappointed that my University Biology classes didn’t also include drawing. So, I made sure that when I taught “Natural History of Invertebrates,” I made it a requirement that students lab grade was based on their collection of invertebrate drawings.
I would also draw as the students worked in lab. This for me was great fun, unlike the torture that my students complained about, Yet, when their grade was based on these drawings they were all capable aof producing a sketch (some quite excellent) with necessary notes explaining what the protist (or other invertebrate) was and how it was identified.
The next art challenge is evolution.
More on that tomorrow…
