A friend’s artistic challenge

Black-and-white Warbler

The idea that my friend Megan is doing for her podcast series is part of Sciartober 2021, an endeavor for scientific illustrators. Since i am not a medical illustrator in any sense of the word, I thought that I’d do the ideas for the day with older sketches, drawing and illustrations that I had done in the past. The first day’s challenge is “winged.” Well for be that’s simple – birds! Although insects could fit in perfectly. But I’ll start the challenge off with warblers.

Blackburnian Warbler

In the late 1980s and early 1990s I was trying to put together my own little guide to New World birds. These are all black-and-white illustrations. And maybe some day I’ll finish the project.

With over 40 species of warblers this, back then was going to be a difficult and time consuming project. Which is why I never completed it.

Ovenbird

But doing these studies was a lot of fun. I probably have another 12-15 in scattered journals that I’ll use later in this series.

Next time the theme is Microscopic.

Until then…
