The day started as all do for us at the cabin. I head down to make coffee and then take some up to Susan. Then after breakfast we headed to the point to see what’s happening with birds.

We walked to where the waterfowl are counted in both the spring and fall. Then we headed to the small observation deck looking out at Lake Superior. Finally, we walked over to the hawk observation deck where hawks are tallied in the spring.

Getting to the hawk dune where the platform is located is much easier than when I first started coming to Whitefish Point in the 1970s. This uphill climb was quite difficult years ago.

Many people come to Whitefish Point, not for the birds but rather the Great Lakes freighters and the Shipwreck Museum.

If you ever come here I highly recommend visiting the museum. It is well worth the cost of admission. But even they are impacted by recent events.

Every building had this sign on it, referring to the pandemic conditions in Paradise, the closest town, 11 miles south of Whitefish Point. Personally, I wish that the “recommending a mask”, was “you must wear a mask to enter. The site is usually packed by 10 AM, often resulting in a filled parking lot by noon.
