The hectic days of fall

Last Sunday we had breakfast at the garden with a great friend. This marked the start of a hectic week.

Then we spent part of the day in downtown Ann Arbor. We really enjoyed the “Graffiti Alley.”

Nickels Arcade has been a favorite stop for many years.

The Michigan Theatre was just begging to be photographed.

Finally Sunday lunch at Jerusalem Garden, where the falafel wrap was excellent.

Monday started in the garden, picking tomatoes and beans. Then we managed to go and pick raspberries, before I was working on the finishing touches to a talk that I was giving on Friday,

Working on the talk I started thinking about learning trees and shrubs by drawing them. I believe that when you take the time to draw something you really learn how to see it. The above sketches were from my tree book. Within this small volume I illustrated and sketched all of the trees in southern Michigan – leaves, twigs and fruits.

The tree book lead to thinking about learning to better understand insects, using the same approach.

For instance, getting to better understand a grasshopper.

Or the face of a grasshopper.

The week ended with a zoom class on natural history walks in Washtenaw County, and remembering a piece from December 2001 – when I was asked to write something about the events of 11 September.

More tomorrow when things will be less hectic…
