Wherever I have been in the past 40 years I loved to draw. My earliest drawings (from 40-50 years ago) are all very private and I was not confident enough to draw while others were watching. But as confidence built I started drawing when others were around. I took sketch books where-ever I went. In January, 2001 I did the above sketch with colored pens while we were at a performance of the dance “the 100th Monkey.”
Susan and I would often taken notebooks and find a place to sit with a coffee and draw, and or write. Like the sketch of “David’s Books” and “Discount Records” in downtown Ann Arbor.

Sometimes I would use pens, rather than pencils for drawing, just to challenge myself. But I do love drawing with pencils, like the drawing of a hornbill from the Minnesota zoo.

For some years I did a lot of drawing in zoos, attempting to take more time observing animals and getting the feel for how to draw each one. Fortunately the hornbill sat in that position for quite some time.

I would even take a sketchbook to musical concerts. The above sketch was done of Natalie McMasters at the Ark in Ann Arbor.
Tomorrow I might use some drawings from the Belle Isle Aquarium, in Detroit or an Aquarium that we visited in Florida or the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago.
Until then…
