Photos from today’s adventure

This afternoon we decided to head out from our cabin at Whitefish Point to search for orchids and other interesting plants. First we stopped just north of the mouth of the Tahquamenon River to show Dan Sparks-Jackson the large number of small purple fringed orchids in bloom. In a stretch of sone 20 meters there were more or less 100 in peak to almost-peak bloom. One small patch had 5-6 white flowered ones as well as porple.

Then as we walked back to the car Dan spotted a small group of four club-spurred orchids. We often find these at Nan Weston Preserve in Washtenaw County, Michigan, so it was nice finding them at another site.

The club-spur orchid is attractive, although smaller and less showy than the fringed orchids.

These two orchids were just the start of our botanical adventure as we headed off to Naomikong Point in search of other interesting plants and insects.
